History
The surname is embedded in the history of the Vatsonga people, who originally inhabited the coastal lowlands of Mozambique. During the 19th-century Mfecane (a period of widespread chaos and warfare), many Tsonga clans migrated westward into the northern Transvaal—now known as the Limpopo Province—to escape conflicts and the expansion of the Gaza Empire.
